Ranking Creative Side Hustles with Matt murray

Hey everyone, welcome to the new year! After a chaotic 2024, I’m ready to be more intentional with my time and energy, and I’m sure many of you feel the same way.

To kick things off, I’ve brought in my good friend Matt Murray from Matt Loves Cameras to help us break down and rank a bunch of creative side hustles. We’ll dive into what it’s really like to start, grow, and earn from different creative outlets.

From monetizing YouTube and writing for platforms like Fstoppers, to stock photography and selling your zines, we cover it all. Between the two of us, we’ve experimented with nearly everything, and even if you weren’t thinking about starting a side hustle this year, this conversation will probably spark some curiosity about what you could create—whether online or in the real world.

If you’re not already following Matt on Substack and YouTube, I highly recommend you do! He’s a great guy who puts community at the centre of everything he does and has been an amazing support to me and many other film photographers worldwide.

This episode is a bit on the longer side—Matt and I love to chat, laugh, and dive deep into things—so it’s perfect for a long drive, walk, or even just hanging out at home. If you’re out shooting photos, I hope you grab some great shots and enjoy the conversation!

Matt also has a dedicated Japan Pics Substack you should check out!

You can work in order or pick at random and all the ideas are evergreen, meaning they are free from trends and instead are rich in authenticity, foster connection and community and won’t go out of style like the latest trends on TikTok and IG.
